South Melbourne Extension
This project is a renovation/extension to a Edwardian period home in South Melbourne. The existing house had good sized front rooms, but the house needed a new living room, dining room and kitchen, as well as more bedrooms for the young family.
The main challenges of this project is to find the balance between meeting the spatial needs of the client, whilst respecting the well-preserved heritage value of the street. The response was to create a long angled roof that would be well set back from the street, so it would appear 'recessive', and at the same time used modern elements so as to create contrast between the new and old.
The design of the rear of the house was deliberately modern, with clean lines and meticulous detailing, as the rear of the house would not be read in a period context, and the clients preferred a modern addition rather than trying to imitate the existing house.
