Mixed-Use Development – Railway Arcade, Hawthorn

This 13-storey mixed-use development is prominently located adjacent to Glenferrie Station in Hawthorn. The project comprises ground-floor retail spaces, first-floor commercial offices, and 11 levels of residential apartments above — creating a vibrant vertical community in a key urban location.

A key feature of the site is the heritage-listed building at its base, which was retained and carefully integrated into the overall design. To respect the heritage fabric, a distinct visual separation was introduced through a darker material banding on levels 2 and 3, creating a clear dialogue between the old and the new.

The design also includes a striking curved-glass public arcade at ground level, offering shelter for commuters moving between Glenferrie Road and the train station. Inspired by the sweeping forms of grand European railway stations, this arcade not only serves a practical function but enhances the public realm with a gesture of architectural elegance and civic generosity.
