Roberts Street Townhouses, Essendon

Roberts Street is a considered exploration of what multi-residential living can become when approached with the same rigour and ambition typically reserved for bespoke homes. Designed for two closely connected families, the project reimagines the side-by-side townhouse typology as a cohesive yet individualised living environment. Each residence is conceived as a refined, contemporary dwelling defined by disciplined minimalism, where clean lines are softened through a deliberate use of curvature, natural materials and tactile finishes including Venetian plaster, stone and timber.

The planning responds to both lifestyle and longevity, organising generous, light-filled spaces across three levels connected by lift. Ground floors are anchored by expansive open-plan living, dining and kitchen zones that extend seamlessly to alfresco terraces, pools and landscaped gardens, reinforcing a strong indoor–outdoor relationship. Above, private zones include a master suite with ensuite and robe, alongside additional bedrooms each with their own ensuite and a shared retreat space. The basement level accommodates recreation and wellness functions, supporting a holistic approach to contemporary family living.

At the heart of each home, a sculptural spiral stair rises beneath a circular skylight, introducing natural light deep into the plan while acting as a central spatial and visual anchor. This interplay of light and form is echoed throughout, with carefully positioned openings and skylights enhancing volume and atmosphere. Large steel-framed doors dissolve the boundary between interior and exterior, while a restrained material palette reinforces a sense of calm and continuity. Roberts Street Townhouses ultimately challenges the conventional expectations of townhouse development, demonstrating that density can be achieved without compromise - delivering homes that are both highly liveable and architecturally expressive.
